Both are plated in 18kt gold (Gold and White Gold, respectively). Designed as an elegant dress watch to be worn during celebrations for the Emperor's wedding anniversary, this square shaped manual wind vintage piece has a lot going on. Yes, a replacement dial! The spare dial is a non-Kotobuki version of the dial, i.e. a “plain” dial. My understanding is that people were expected to use the Kotobuki dial during the 50th Anniversary year, and then switch to the plain dial for the “non-anniversary” years that followed. As the pattern is not simply a print but is fully textured instead, the dial plays brilliantly in the light. Not only was it a technical milestone, it looked beautifully strange doing it. During the design phase, Citizen encountered a serious problem - the metal parts of the movement would sometimes block the radio signal. The solution? Elevate the antenna above the movement and all of its signal blocking parts.

The Functionality. The result is striking. It might look like the antenna sits above the crystal, but it’s actually buried inside it, giving the watch its distinct look. But it’s not just an unusual face - there’s a 12/24-hour subdial, as well as a time zone selector that gives the watch GMT functionality, and a push-activated calendar.

The How. Once per day (at different times depending on the day of the week), the watch will check for Atomic Clock Radio Waves. If you’re within 800km of an appropriate tower the watch can automatically adjust the time to be correct to the second. The dial and hands are flawless, but the crystal has some tiny hairlines marks. It has a Hi-Beat 28800bph movement, with 50 hours of power reserve, retrograde day, circular date pointer, and a 24-hour sub-dial with an independently adjustable hour hand (GMT). Just like in an automatic mechanical watch, your arm/wrist movements spin a rotor that powers the watch. However, unlike a standard automatic movement, energy is stored in a capacitor and then passed through quartz crystal.

The Advantages. Being a hybrid between mechanical and quartz has several distinct advantages. Thanks to the quartz crystal the watch is accurate to +/- 15 seconds per month. However, unlike a quartz watch you don’t need to replace the battery every 1 or 2 years as the battery isn’t generating the power; your movement is. The recommended replacement for a Kinetic Capacitor is every 10-20 years! When fully powered, the watch has a huge 10-day power reserve. When not in use, the watch enters “auto relay” mode which is essentially a form of hibernation. While hibernating, in order to conserve power, the watch stops ticking, but a tiny IC stays powered and keeps track of the time and date. As soon as you pick the watch up all of the hands spring to life and the calendar and time set themselves accurately. It can stay in a state of hibernation for up to four years.

High-End. It was a part of Seiko’s luxury line up at the time of release, costing over $1300 at the time, not adjusting for inflation. Instead, it opts for four sub-dials - five, if you’re generous enough to count the date window! Sato took his inspiration from aircraft cockpit instrumentation. Often described as retro-futuristic, the design has always struck me as something else entirely. There’s a charmingly antiquated quality to it - part WWII pilot’s watch, due to its stark contrasts and simple legibility, and part Otsuka Lotec, with a mechanically inspired, industrial aesthetic.

The Movement. The movement is classic Seiko innovation - a hybrid between electric and kinetic energy. Often referred to by Seiko as the brand’s “third movement type” (after mechanical and quartz), it functions like an automatic in that it uses a rotor to generate energy. However, instead of winding a mainspring, that energy is stored in a rechargeable long-life capacitor. You get the accuracy of quartz, with the longevity of an automatic. Capacitor replacements are needed only every 10 to 15 years - far less frequently than the typical 1–2-year battery change required by standard quartz watches.

The History. You might have noticed the similarity between this type of hybrid movement and Seiko’s now more famous, fully automatic, “hybrid” movement - the Spring Drive. The two are certainly connected, as both movement types were hand-assembled at Grand Seiko's Shinshu Watch Studio. Seiko created the Spring Drive in the '80s but didn’t commercialise it a few years after the release of these Kinetic movements. The Kinetic series is a commercial pre-cursor to the Spring Drive, although the exact creative and historical link between the two would need to be defined by Seiko themselves.

The Warning. As a general rule, never buy one of these high-end Kinetics unless it’s been recently serviced and had a new capacitor installed. The sale of the watch includes both the metal bracelet and leather strap.

The Medallion. Synonymous with vintage Grand Seikos – the 18k gold medallion, still in perfect condition.

Condition: It was serviced in 2024 by a Vintage Grand Seiko Specialist company in Tokyo, Japan. They also lightly, but expertly, polished the case. They are the only company, other than Seiko and Lapinist, I trust to polish vintage cases. You’ll notice all of the edges are still crisp and to the original shape. The polish was very light, so some hairlines and marks remain. The movement itself is currently running at an average of +1 second per day, averaged across six positions. This is well within the original spec of +5 to -3 seconds per day! The only negative part about the condition is the small stain that can be seen at the bottom of the dial. From most angles it isn’t visible. The crystal and medallion are flawless. I often find myself saying this about Presage dials, but this level of dial craftsmanship won’t be found at this price point on any other watch.

Limited Edition. Limited to 2,500 and it sold out very quickly upon its release in 2019.

The Heritage. The SARX059 features the indices and minute track markers found on their 1895 Time Keeper Pocket Watch.

Condition: In good condition overall. A quintessentially accidental “limited edition” from Seiko, as its sudden discontinuation has made them very hard to find. Its dial is dark ivory with a subtle sunburst effect, and it's recessed subdials achieve a similar sunburst visual through their use of rippled, concentric circles.

The Hybrid. A 7D48 “Kinetic” movement. Kinetic movements originally served as a hybrid pre-cursor to the Grand Seiko’s Spring Drive movement. Just like in an automatic mechanical watch, your arm/wrist movements spin a rotor that powers the watch. However, unlike a standard automatic movement, energy is stored in a capacitor and then passed through quartz crystal.

The Complication. The main complication is a leap year Perpetual Calendar with Big Date. The main concern with an automatic perpetual calendar is the inconvenience of having to regularly reset it when it runs out of power. However, thanks to the “relay mode” you won’t have to worry about that, as your watch will enter a hibernation state if you haven't recently worn it. While hibernating the watch stops ticking, but a tiny IC stays powered and keeps track of the time and date. As soon as you pick the watch up the hands spring to life and the calendar and time set themselves accurately. It can stay in a state of hibernation for up to four years!

The Strap. Most commonly found on aftermarket straps, this has the original leather strap and deployant buckle from Seiko. Flick it back to “Time” mode and the hands effortlessly glide back into their respective temporal places. But perhaps the oddest mode is “Timer” mode; the pushers are used to set a timer between 1-60 minutes, and an alarm sounds at the end. Pretty straightforward. The odd part? The hands tick backwards. For many years, Jiro Katayama worked in the automotive industry designing cars. After purchasing a metalworking lathe and practising with it by shaping circular watch cases, he became fascinated with the idea of building a watch from scratch. He spent the next four years teaching himself (via YouTube and Google) how to fabricate the various parts needed to build a watch using nothing but his trusty lathe. This "low technology" approach eventually gave rise to the company name; Lotec.

Theme. The double retrograde hour and minute hand complication finds itself on a rhodium-plated “speedometer” dial that was clearly inspired by Katayama’s automotive background. A “small seconds” disc slowly turns at the bottom of the dial, and dial feet have been discarded in lieu of dial screws. Combined with the screw-in case and fully brushed finish, one immediately grasps Katayama’s design principles.

Rarity. Initially, production output was very limited - after all, it was still just Katayama working on each part by himself in his Otsuka workshop. Fortunately, Hajime Asaoka (yes, the Hajime Asaoka of Kurono Tokyo fame) let Katayama borrow three of his employees, allowing production to increase to from little over a dozen per year to nearly 80. Nevertheless, acquiring one remains no small feat. A lottery takes place every few months and is only open to people with a Japanese credit card and Japanese address, with the lucky winners getting to buy one of his watches.

The Case. 316L steel with a richly brushed finished, and case screws that are actual screws (instead of pushed through bolts simply designed to look like screws, as on the AP Royal Oak) complete the mechanical look. Katayama designed and hand-makes all of the parts for the the double retrograde and second disc complication you see on this watch. The Miyota movement is used as a base movement to which an in-house ratcheting retrograde system (among other things) have been added.

Condition: Brand new in the original box with all of the papers.
