In fact, I’ve written about almost every variant - from solid gold shoji dials to raden lacquer finishing. Today, I’m both honoured and saddened to be writing about the final piece from the now discontinued collection - the GBLP998.

The Anniversary. Released in 2009 to celebrate the 10th anniversary of the Spring Drive, the aptly named Crimson Sky retailed for an impressive ~$20,000. But the punchy price was justified by its solid gold case and distinct mother-of-pearl dial.

The Dial. Distinct is probably an understatement. Unique, perhaps? I don’t claim to know every Seiko ever produced, but I certainly don’t know any with a dial like the GBLP998. Seiko rarely uses mother-of-pearl as it is, so the rich red hues give the watch face a double dose of rarity.

The Result. But it isn’t just red. Thanks to the iridescent qualities of mother-of-pearl, you’ll also catch flashes of purples, greens and blues. Something that can only be fully appreciated in person. Given you’re not standing next to me, a video will have to suffice - luckily I’ve got you covered.

The Movement. It’s more than just a pretty face as the 7R87 Spring Drive, visible through the exhibition caseback, is impressively slim. At just 9.9mm, the GBLP998 even undercuts Grand Seiko’s famously slim Omiwatari, which measures in at 10.2mm.

Specifications:

Condition: In great condition overall.
