In the years that followed, he enlisted the help of his nephews to work at his prospering shop - hence the eventual company name Cuervo y Sobrinos, or Cuervo \u0026amp; Nephews. \u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003e\u003cstrong\u003eThe Change.\u003c\/strong\u003e The company found continued success for 100 years, but under Fidel Castro, most reasonably-sized private businesses were nationalised and controlled by the Government. Cuervo y Sobrinos had become the central player in Cuban horology - not only as a watchmaker, but also as the country’s largest importer of Swiss watches - so in 1965 standard operations ceased and Cuervo y Sobrinos was required to make watches for the Cuban military instead. \u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp class=\"_1qeIAgB0cPwnLhDF9XSiJM\"\u003e\u003cstrong\u003eThe End.\u003c\/strong\u003e Record-keeping wasn’t exactly a priority during the widespread nationalisation, so the exact year isn’t known, but in the decades that followed Cuervo y Sobrinos slowly ceased to exist - both as a family-owned entity, and as a general name. \u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp class=\"_1qeIAgB0cPwnLhDF9XSiJM\"\u003e\u003cstrong\u003eThe Revival. \u003c\/strong\u003eFortunately, the company was revived in the late ‘90s. Operating out of Switzerland, it unveiled its new collection at Baselworld in 2002. By 2005 it was making its own chronograph movements in-house, and in 2009 Cuervo y Sobrinos opened a boutique and museum in Havana. Don’t you just love it when a story comes full circle?\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp class=\"_1qeIAgB0cPwnLhDF9XSiJM\"\u003e\u003cstrong\u003eThe Movement.\u003c\/strong\u003e The watch on offer today is perhaps just as intriguing as its company’s origin story. Looking at the extended tonneau-shaped case, and the position of the two sets of hands, you might have already guessed there isn’t an ordinary dual time movement inside the Prominente Doble Tiempo. Flip it over and its secret is revealed: two separate movements!\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp class=\"_1qeIAgB0cPwnLhDF9XSiJM\"\u003e\u003cstrong\u003eThe Layout.\u003c\/strong\u003e Each movement is an in-house CYS 5024 calibre, which is a modified version of the ETA 2671. The top dial is a standard 12-hour setup, with central day and date windows, whereas the bottom dial is a 24-hour arrangement. Because each movement is totally separate, each dial is controlled by its own crown - allowing you to set the exact minutes and hours independently.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp class=\"_1qeIAgB0cPwnLhDF9XSiJM\"\u003e\u003cstrong\u003eThe Design.\u003c\/strong\u003e Named after one of the largest cigar sizes, the Prominente packs a visual punch thanks to its doble tiempo layout, deep-set guilloché ridges, and generously sized case. Like any watch, there’s absolutely no argument for it needing gemstones - but there is something oddly balanced about the three carats of brilliant cut diamonds lining the case.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp class=\"_1qeIAgB0cPwnLhDF9XSiJM\"\u003e\u003cstrong\u003eThe Details. \u003c\/strong\u003eEven under macro scrutiny, the complexity of the silvery, patterned dial sits comfortably alongside the uniformly set diamonds - and although hard to pin down, I think it’s that quest for geometric perfection that makes this Cuervo y Sobrinos so visually satisfying. \u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp class=\"_1qeIAgB0cPwnLhDF9XSiJM\"\u003e\u003cstrong\u003eThe Gemstones.\u003c\/strong\u003e 374 diamonds, VVS1 to VS1, F to G colour, with a total carat weight of 2.962. It retailed for just over $18,000 which makes it one of the most expensive Cuervos in recent memory. Given the brand ceased operations after being nationalised by the government, it feels somehow appropriate that a later revival would produce something so unapologetically ostentatious - the sort of watch that would have flown directly in the face of Fidel Castro’s communist regime.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003ch2 class=\"_1qeIAgB0cPwnLhDF9XSiJM\"\u003e\u003cstrong\u003eSpecifications:\u003c\/strong\u003e\u003c\/h2\u003e\n\u003cp class=\"_1qeIAgB0cPwnLhDF9XSiJM\"\u003e\u003cstrong\u003eCondition:\u003c\/strong\u003e In very good condition overall.
