The studio is best known for producing all mechanical Grand Seikos, but it might surprise you to learn that Studio Shizukuishi also quietly operated a Build-To-Order system for 15 years.

The Production. For a reasonable price, you could create your own high-end Seiko from parts crafted by the Studio Shizukuishi artisans. The service was discontinued in 2023, but previously created bespoke examples occasionally surface for sale in Japan - and the watch on offer today is one such example.

The Movements. There were four calibres on which your watch could be built, and to avoid confusion with standard Seikos, the movements had their reference numbers tweaked: NC77 Chronograph (equivalent to 6S77), ND75 Calendar (equivalent to 8L75), NC56 Multifunction (equivalent to 4S77), and NB98 Ultra Slim (equivalent to 6898).

The Rarity. You’ll often see these watches being described as Pièce Uniques online, but I wouldn’t go that far. While they are bespoke, their designs definitely didn’t have to be unique. You could choose from a handful of dials, hands and straps, but the case itself was determined by the calibre. If we don’t consider the straps to be components, there were roughly 60 possible combinations across the four movements. While you’re unlikely to bump into your Shizukuishi doppelganger in person, it’s probably out there somewhere - mathematically speaking.

Specifications:

Condition: In great condition.
