Features:

The Origin. The Campanola NZ0001-04E is a very literal mix of Swiss and Japanese watchmaking. In 2012, Citizen acquired Swiss movement manufacturer La Joux-Perret, and in 2015, the results of that acquisition became public - the first automatic Campanola. Originally priced at ¥1,045,000 (~$9,200 at the time), it was the most expensive Campanola ever made - though that honour now emphatically belongs to the $65,000 Flying Tourbillon Campanola

The Name. The name 彪目金, or Ayamekin, was coined by Campanola, and its meaning is immediately clear once the kanji are broken down:

彪 = aye = tiger

目 = me = eye

金 = kin = golden

Whether inspired by a literal tiger’s eye or the gemstone bearing the same name, both interpretations feel appropriate. Although in some contexts, 彪 can also mean leopard, adding another layer of depth.

The Dial. The dial is a striking array of colours. A brazen orange lacquer is flecked with gold powder to create a uniquely speckled look. Citizen entrusted the creation of these dials to a single craftsman - Tetsuo Gido, a renowned master of the 400-year-old Aizu lacquerware technique.

The Process. To achieve the dial’s distinctive pattern, master urushi artisan Tetsuo Gido employs a rare finishing method called Nanako-nuri - a technique historically used to harden and decorate samurai armour, giving warriors the courage of a tiger. While the lacquer is still wet, he sprinkles rapeseeds across the surface, and as the lacquer dries, the seeds imprint gentle circular forms into the finish. Once fully cured, the seeds are removed, leaving behind an intricate constellation of natural, irregular rings - ensuring each dial is truly unique.

The Variance. Campanola gives Tetsuo Gido a great deal of artist freedom when design each dial, and this is what sets Campanola apart from even Seiko’s most artisanal dials. Gido decides the placement, density, and colour of every leopard spot and background, using maki-e and hand-polishing techniques to finish the chapter rings individually. The NZ0001-04E on offer today is one of the bolder examples, with a bright orange base and deep black rings for maximum contrast.

      Do I have to pay customs or taxes?

      It depends on so many factors, including but not limited to; the cost of the watch, the type of watch you've bought (vintage, new, or modified), and the import and tax laws of your country. If you're unsure we recommend checking the import laws that relate to your country before ordering.
