Features:
The Prestige. Limited to just 300 pieces. Only 13 watchmakers were deemed skilled enough to work on these hand-assembled Campanolas at Citizen’s Minami-Shinshu studio, and when you read through the list of complications, it easy to understand why.
The Complications. It houses a Moonphase, Leap year, Perpetual Triple Calendar, 12-hour, split-time chronograph with sweeping second hand, 24-hour dial, GMT functionality, and Minute Repeater. Most of those functions won’t need any explanation, but a minute repeater deserves to be talked about.
The Minute Repeater. When activated, the minute repeater plays a chime that audibly conveys the current time, essentially acting as a musical Morse code for your wrist. Intriguingly, the chime’s time-setting can operate independently of the displayed time, allowing it to function as a GMT “hand.”
The Craftsmanship. Yet beyond the technical bravado, it’s also beautifully composed. Both the dial and chapter ring are lacquered in a deep, alluring blue, though unlike many of Campanola’s more exuberant designs, there’s no titanium powder, gold, or mother-of-pearl suspended in the finish. This is from a brief era that saw Campanola flirt with subtly, and I’m all for it. The sleek lacquer finish still offers a lot visually, and it’s the first time Campanola extended lacquer to the chapter ring, which does a lot to complete the look. The decoration is said to represent the “endless void of the universe”.
