How do you make seven hands less noticeable on a dial? Put a 30mm copper antenna in the middle of the dial.
Model: 7400-c70007, Citizen Radio Control
Year Produced: 1993
Features:
7400 movement. Released in 1993, this is the world’s first radio-controlled analogue watch, and it’s also sporting a 12/24 hour sub-dial, a preset/pseudo-GMT selector, and a pusher based day and month indicator. It may not be to everyone’s taste, but you can’t pretend it isn’t incredibly interesting to look at!
GMT Functionality. The sub-dial in the bottom left allows you to choose between central Europe, the UK, and Japanese time at the click of a pusher. L-1 and L-2 are two programmable times that can be set by the user, giving the watch GMT functionality. The main dial on the right-hand side of the watch is typically controlled by radio signals, but it can be overridden to display anytime you desire.
Radio Controlled. Once per day (at different times depending on the day of the week), the watch will check for Atomic Clock Radio Waves. If you’re within 800km of an appropriate tower the watch can automatically adjust the time to be correct to the second. You can also make the watch manually confirm the time using radio waves whenever you need it to (by pressing a combination of buttons). Everything works as intended, and I have been able to receive radio signal (in the UK and Japan). Thanks to modern technology you can use your phone to spoof radio signals if you don’t live close enough to a radio transmitter. I’ve not tried it myself, but according to the various videos on YouTube and discussions on WUS it definitely works! You can also manually set the time yourself without needing to use any form of radio signal.
Unique Design. When Citizen were working on building the first ever radio-controlled analogue watch, they had a serious problem to overcome that their digital competitors didn’t have; an abundance of metal parts that kept blocking the radio signal. The solution? Put the antenna front and centre, above all of the other metal parts. It might look like it’s above the crystal but it’s actually inside it, giving it a real unique shape.
Two Tone Bracelet. The original bracelet, able to accommodate an 8.2" (21cm) wrist.
Condition: Excellent condition. The only signs of wear are on the caseback It has the classic self-inflicted markings of the bracelet scratching against it as the watch has been handled over the last 30 years.
