The Complication. Whether we’re talking about mechanical movements or spring drives, the only high-end Seiko movement with a Big Date complication is the 7R87 Credor Spring Drive. And this is where the Big Date story ends. For now, at least. Over the past fifteen years, Seiko has released just a handful of Big Date Spring Drive models, spread thinly across 2009, 2014, 2018, and 2019. The GBLP996 is the most recent - and arguably the most ambitious.

The Rarity. It stands atop the Big Date pyramid with an eye-watering retail price of $20,000. That’s a steep climb, even for a solid 18K gold watch - and perhaps explains why it quietly vanished almost as soon as it arrived. Despite not being a limited edition, it has almost no digital footprint. I’m confident very few pieces were ever made, with most of them presumably sitting in Japanese bank vaults for safekeeping.

The Design. Inspired by traditional Japanese shoji - the paper panels used in doors and windows - the dial has been etched with a subtle crosshatched texture. Not immediately obvious but it’s a quiet nod to its Japanese heritage. Even at arm’s length, you’ll notice shadows dancing across the textured surface. While other Big Date models have leaned on raden, lacquer, and textures for their visual flair, the GBLP996 lets its choice of materials speak for itself. It’s quietly luxurious - a final statement in the Big Date lineage that feels more like a whispered farewell than an explosive finale.

The Spring Drive. The tactile ritual of winding a watch is hard to explain to those who haven’t experienced it - it’s almost meditative. Rolling the crown between my fingers in the early morning, as I wait for my espresso machine to warm up, becomes a cherished part of my daily routine. With the 7R87 Spring Drive, removing the automatic rotor not only enhances the manual-winding experience but also ensures that the beauty of the movement isn’t obscured.

The Dimensions. The absence of the rotor also trims down the case thickness, giving this Spring Drive a more traditionally dressy profile. At just 9.9mm thick, it’s slimmer than any Grand Seiko Spring Drive on the market.

The Fit. Its slim dimensions and brushed oyster-style bracelet make it an absolute delight to wear. Winding the crown and watching the power reserve indicator rise is deeply satisfying. The heat-blued second hand comes to life, and as it glides around the textured dial, its underside creates a perfectly mirrored reflection on the oversized Zaratsu-polished 2, 4, and 7 markers - something you’ll never tire of.

FAQs

Are your watches authentic?

Everything we sell is 100% authentic.

All of our watches are inspected and verified for authenticity - both inside and out. We have over 15 years of sourcing and collecting rare watches in Japan, which is often considered to be one of the best markets for authentic and fully original vintage watches.

Do you ship globally?

We are based in Japan and regularly ship all over the world. We typically use FedEx and it takes:

  • 3-7 business days to reach North America
  • 3-7 business days to reach Europe
  • 3-7 business days to reach Asia and Oceania.

All of our packages are securely shipped, fully insured, and trackable door-to-door.

What condition are your watches?

Due to the vintage and neo-vintage nature of the watches we typically sell, the condition varies from watch to watch. However, our photos are high resolution and our descriptions are accurate. You can buy with confidence knowing there won't be any nasty surprises.

If the condition of a watch is ever misrepresented, we would offer a full refund.

Are all of your watches serviced?

Most but not all of our watches are serviced. The "Condition" section of each watch will confirm if the watch has been serviced.

All of our watches are tested by an independent watchmaker - if a service is needed, the watch will be serviced. If a service hasn't been conducted, it's because the watch itself is too new to need a service, or there is evidence of a recent service.

What payment methods do you accept?

We accept payment by all major Credit Cards and Wise.com

Do I have to pay customs or taxes?

It depends on so many factors, including but not limited to the cost of the watch, the type of watch you've bought (vintage or new), and the import laws of your country. If you're unsure we recommend checking the import laws that relate to your country before ordering.

Are your watches water resistant?

Our serviced watches are typically tested to their original water resistant specifications, but we would never recommend pushing vintage or neo-vintage watches to their depth limits.

What is your returns policy?

Due to the vintage and neo-vintage nature of most of our watches, we do not offer returns under normal circumstances. All sales should be considered final.
