Features:
The Celebration. Credor marked its 50th anniversary with a watch that echoed the earliest days of the 68 calibre - a design that predated Credor itself.
The Brand. It’s been a long journey of discovery for the brand. An excessive focus on precious metals consumed the first 20 years of its catalogue, while its neo-vintage era saw it take consistent and ambitious strides forward, both aesthetically and technically. It’s easiest to divide Credor into two distinct eras - before and after Mamoru Sakurada and Kiyoshi Terui.
The Craftsmen. Credor’s two longest-serving artisans are responsible for developing the brand we recognise today. In 1996, they reworked the 68 calibre and set a gold standard for Credor going forward. And like the second watch featured in today’s newsletter, the GCBY995 on offer today looks back at the brand’s heritage.
The Heritage. The very first 68 calibre (68A) was released by Seiko in 1969, before Credor was even founded. With its solid gold case and linen dial, the watch had an emphasis on form. But one year later, Seiko created a no-frills, stainless steel monobloc 68 calibre watch that focused on function, allowing millimetres to be shaved off the total width. Attempting to effortlessly marry function and form would become Credor’s modus operandi - and as you might have already noticed, the GCBY995 pays homage to both of the early 68 designs.
The Design. Roman numerals aren’t a go-to choice for Credor, so it’s always special to see them out in the wild - especially on a modern release. And while the linen dial might be more subtly demonstrated on the GCBY995 than on the 1969 original, its personality is no less clear. The painted numerals are applied in multiple layers to the champagne dial, giving them a slight visual lift - not something you’re likely to spot outside of macro photography, but going that extra step is a classically Credor move.
The Movement. At just 1.98mm thick, the 68 movement is the thinnest mechanical calibre ever produced by Seiko. Each one takes two highly skilled Credor watchmakers half a day to assemble.
