The Dial. Mother of pearl, with an etched guilloché subdial. As beautiful as it is a rare sight. Seiko’s use of MOP is conservative at best - typically deployed as an accent through traditional techniques like Raden. By my count, there are fewer than a handful of examples of full MOP dials across its men’s collections.
The Method. Each shell used for a mother of pearl dial is selected by hand, and the resulting pearlescence varies wildly - from blues, to pinks, to greens and even browns. In my view, these shifting tones work particularly well when used with restraint, as a subtle and contrasting accent. Where they don’t work so well is as a big, aggressive, smorgasbord of colour that dominates the entire watch face.
The Comparison. At the risk of sounding biased, watches like the Rolex Daytona 116508 can quickly become messy-looking and and overwhelming. The GBBE972, by contrast, makes a compelling argument for discretion when selecting the shell.
The Result. Instead of punchy colours, Credor’s designers have opted for a lively looking texture - resulting in an organic Sea of Clouds style finish similar to the newly released SBGH311.
The Movement. At just 1.98mm thick, the 68 movement is the thinnest mechanical calibre ever produced by Seiko. Each one takes two highly skilled Credor watchmakers half a day to assemble.
