Model: Seiko Credor GBAQ958 / 6870-00S0

Year: 2018

Limited Edition: 25 Pieces

Features:

The Origin. Created to celebrate the 25th anniversary of Seiko’s thinnest movement, the 68 calibre, the GBAQ958 was limited to just 25 pieces. And while the number neatly mirrors the anniversary itself, a dial of this complexity was never destined for regular production.

The Design. While all dress watches blur the line between artistry and horology, Credor occasionally behaves as if that line doesn’t exist at all - and few watches demonstrate that better than the GBAQ958. It effortlessly blends three traditional Japanese decorative techniques. The dial is finished in a jet-black Urushi lacquer, and features Maki-e designs in gold and platinum, as well as inlaid slices of mother-of-pearl, known as Raden.

The Phoenix. The Taka Maki-e Phoenix is particularly noteworthy. Seiko’s - and arguably Japan’s - foremost Urushi lacquer expert, Isshu Tamura, built the bird’s three-dimensional form by mixing minerals into the lacquer as it hardened. The result is not only striking in macro photography, but easily noticeable on the wrist. In Japanese symbolism, the phoenix represents prosperity and renewal. Shown to be flying against the wind - represented by the slices mother-of-pearl - it pushes forwards nonetheless. Imagery that has been chosen to echo Japan’s resilience and quiet determination.

The Artist. Not only did Isshu Tamura lacquer the dials for the GBAQ958 and SBGK004, which retailed for $25,000 and $33,000 respectively, but he also hand-lacquered watches like the infinitely more affordable SARD011, which is for sale at the bottom of today’s newsletter. There’s something distinctly Seiko about that approach - assigning a craftsman to a watch simply because they are the best person for the job, regardless of where the recommended retail price happens to land.

The Case. 18k solid rose gold, with a tonneau-shaped exhibition window for the movement. Delightfully delicate like any good dress piece. The Credor branding has been etched into the underside of the crystal, allowing it to cast shadows onto the blackened dial beneath. A sight you'll never get tired of seeing.

The Movement. At just 1.98mm thick, the 6870 movement is the thinnest mechanical calibre ever produced by Seiko. Each one takes two highly skilled Credor watchmakers half a day to assemble.

FAQs

Are your watches authentic?

Everything we sell is 100% authentic.

All of our watches are inspected and verified for authenticity - both inside and out. We have over 15 years of sourcing and collecting rare watches in Japan, which is often considered to be one of the best markets for authentic and fully original vintage watches.

Do you ship globally?

We are based in Japan and regularly ship all over the world. We typically use FedEx and it takes:

  • 3-7 business days to reach North America
  • 3-7 business days to reach Europe
  • 3-7 business days to reach Asia and Oceania.

All of our packages are securely shipped, fully insured, and trackable door-to-door.

What condition are your watches?

Due to the vintage and neo-vintage nature of the watches we typically sell, the condition varies from watch to watch. However, our photos are high resolution and our descriptions are accurate. You can buy with confidence knowing there won't be any nasty surprises.

If the condition of a watch is ever misrepresented, we would offer a full refund.

Are all of your watches serviced?

Most but not all of our watches are serviced. The "Condition" section of each watch will confirm if the watch has been serviced.

All of our watches are tested by an independent watchmaker - if a service is needed, the watch will be serviced. If a service hasn't been conducted, it's because the watch itself is too new to need a service, or there is evidence of a recent service.

What payment methods do you accept?

We accept payment by all major Credit Cards and Wise.com

Do I have to pay customs or taxes?

It depends on so many factors, including but not limited to the cost of the watch, the type of watch you've bought (vintage or new), and the import laws of your country. If you're unsure we recommend checking the import laws that relate to your country before ordering.

Are your watches water resistant?

Our serviced watches are typically tested to their original water resistant specifications, but we would never recommend pushing vintage or neo-vintage watches to their depth limits.

What is your returns policy?

Due to the vintage and neo-vintage nature of most of our watches, we do not offer returns under normal circumstances. All sales should be considered final.
