Model: Credor Rose Gold GBAQ970 / 6870-00J0

Year: November 2011

Features:

The Origin. The 6870 calibre is one of the earliest examples of Credor’s UTD (Ultra-thin Dress) watch movement series. The movement was released in 1993 - the very same year that Seiko’s now-legendary engraver Kiyoshi Terui completed his formal training, so it would be two years until Sakuruda and Terui formed their iconic partnership.

The Build. As a result, the GBAQ970 on offer today is purely Mamoru Sakurada’s brainchild. There are no engravings to admire on the back of this movement, but let’s not feel too sorry for ourselves. At just 1.98mm, the calibre itself remains a remarkable feat, and the front of the watch, as well as its overall finishing, more than compensate.

The Design. The design is a curious blend of Swiss and Japanese influences, bearing a hauntingly similar look to the Watch With No Name. In fact, it appeared not long after the Mitsukoshi Watch Fair - an event central to that model’s backstory - suggesting that the GBAQ970 may have drawn inspiration directly from its rarer cousin.

The Price. Originally priced at ¥1,430,000 (around $16,700 with tax in 2012), the GBAQ970 belongs to Credor’s final era of relative affordability. Calling a $16,000 watch “affordable” may sound absurd, but compared with the six-figure price tags Credor would soon command, the description feels reasonable.

The Case. The case is solid 18k rose gold, as are the baton indices and yama (山) crest at 12 o’clock. Thermally blued feuille hands provide the perfect counterpoint to the dial’s warm sunset tones, the hour hand tracing its path over finely ridged centre textures. At 37mm wide and just 6.1mm thick, the GBAQ970 is every inch the archetypal Credor dress watch - refined in both proportion and assembly.

The Movement. At just 1.98mm thick, the 6898 movement is the thinnest mechanical calibre ever produced by Seiko. Each one takes two highly skilled Credor watchmakers half a day to assemble.

FAQs

Are your watches authentic?

Everything we sell is 100% authentic.

All of our watches are inspected and verified for authenticity - both inside and out. We have over 15 years of sourcing and collecting rare watches in Japan, which is often considered to be one of the best markets for authentic and fully original vintage watches.

Do you ship globally?

We are based in Japan and regularly ship all over the world. We typically use FedEx and it takes:

  • 3-7 business days to reach North America
  • 3-7 business days to reach Europe
  • 3-7 business days to reach Asia and Oceania.

All of our packages are securely shipped, fully insured, and trackable door-to-door.

What condition are your watches?

Due to the vintage and neo-vintage nature of the watches we typically sell, the condition varies from watch to watch. However, our photos are high resolution and our descriptions are accurate. You can buy with confidence knowing there won't be any nasty surprises.

If the condition of a watch is ever misrepresented, we would offer a full refund.

Are all of your watches serviced?

Most but not all of our watches are serviced. The "Condition" section of each watch will confirm if the watch has been serviced.

All of our watches are tested by an independent watchmaker - if a service is needed, the watch will be serviced. If a service hasn't been conducted, it's because the watch itself is too new to need a service, or there is evidence of a recent service.

What payment methods do you accept?

We accept payment by all major Credit Cards and Wise.com

Do I have to pay customs or taxes?

It depends on so many factors, including but not limited to the cost of the watch, the type of watch you've bought (vintage or new), and the import laws of your country. If you're unsure we recommend checking the import laws that relate to your country before ordering.

Are your watches water resistant?

Our serviced watches are typically tested to their original water resistant specifications, but we would never recommend pushing vintage or neo-vintage watches to their depth limits.

What is your returns policy?

Due to the vintage and neo-vintage nature of most of our watches, we do not offer returns under normal circumstances. All sales should be considered final.
