Grand Seiko 6156-8010 Faceted Crystal
Grand Seiko 6156-8010 Faceted Crystal
Model: Grand Seiko 6156-8010 Special, with Faceted Crystal
Year: June 1971
Features:
Faceted Crystal. Two angled facets surround a central plateau, giving this sapphire crystal remarkable side profile, with a subtle look when viewed from the front. An ambitiously shaped crystal, especially when you consider it was one of Seiko's earliest examples of a sapphire crystal. This style of faceted crystal can only be found 8010 variant of the 6156 series.
Not COSC Certified. After a fallout with the Swiss in 1968, Seiko decided to shun the COSC certification process, instead creating their own "Chronometer" style of test, and the first two graduates were the VFA and the 6156 Special. The 6156 Special was certified to an accuracy of -/+3 seconds per day - a remarkable feat, even by today's standards.
The Excellence. The 6156-8010 on offer today embodies this spirit of excellence. This rare Hardened Stainless Steel (HSS) variant features two vertical facets on its sapphire crystal, a bi-lingual quick-set day/date complication, and the iconic, solid gold, medallion.
The Case. The case demonstrates Taro Tanaka’s “Grammar of Design” philosophy, while its 36mm size is as classic as Grand Seiko gets. The dial, like others from this era, has developed a speckled patina, adding character to its authentic vintage appeal.
The Movement. 36,000 bph. Silky smooth. A true hi-beat even by today’s modern standards, so it goes without saying how remarkable this was in 1971. Serviced in 2024 by a specialist Vintage Grand Seiko company in Tokyo, Japan and currently running at an average of +2 second per day across six positions.
The Medallion. The GS medallion on the caseback is in great condition, and it serves as another hallmark of vintage Grand Seiko craftsmanship.
Condition: It’s in great condition overall. The sapphire crystal is immaculate, and the HSS case only has mild signs of wear. The edges and original brush marks are sharp. The medallion on the caseback is free from any signs of aging or damage. The strap is aftermarket.
Scope: No box, manual or papers.
Movement: 6156 Hi-Beat, 36,000 bph. 25 Jewels.
