Model: Seiko 3803-7080 “Baby Morpho”

Year: March 1974

Features:

The Design. One watch, three faces. The Seiko “Morpho” and “Baby Morpho” are aptly named for their dials’ ability to change, or “morph,” colour as you view them from different angles. The heptagonal faceted crystal enhances this eye-catching effect. However, at the time, the dial and crystal were overshadowed by what was inside the watch…

The History. On Christmas Day 1969, Seiko released the world’s first quartz watch—the Seiko Quartz-Astron 35SQ. Often incorrectly cited as a limited release of 100, the Astron 35SQ most likely sold over 1,000 units, which was particularly impressive given that these prototype “electric” watches cost as much as a Ford Mustang at the time (around $3,000). However, the 35-caliber movement was not very reliable and was incredibly costly to produce.

The Movement. The 38-caliber quartz movement, found inside the Baby Morpho, represented Seiko’s attempt to create a more commercially viable option—both in terms of reliability and affordability. Priced at only half(!) the cost of a Ford Mustang, the 3803 “Baby Morpho” was introduced in 1974.

The Bracelet: Totally original and in immaculate condition. A rare find to say the least. Fits a 20cm or 8.0 inch wrist.

Details:

The Condition: In Dead Stock, near mint, condition. Everything is close to flawless. It's definitely not common to find the 3803 in this unworn/unused condition over 52 years since its release! The crystal, dial, hands and lume are all immaculate. The case and bracelet are stunning – totally unpolished and without any noticeable/significant markings. The original sharp edges and brushed finishing is clearly visible across the case.

Scope: It comes with an original Seiko box and Quartz tag, but despite doing lots of research, I am unable to confirm if it's definitely the original box for the Baby Morpho. It's definitely an original Seiko box from the 1970s era, but that's as far as I can verify its origins.

Movement: 3803 Vintage Quartz

Dimensions:

  • Case Width: 38.0mm
  • Case Thickness: 12.0mm to 15.1mm (measured to the lowest point of the crystal to the highest point of the crystal)

Do I have to pay customs or taxes?

It depends on so many factors, including but not limited to; the cost of the watch, the type of watch you've bought (vintage, new, or modified), and the import and tax laws of your country. If you're unsure we recommend checking the import laws that relate to your country before ordering.

        Are your watches water resistant?

All of our watch mods are tested by our own pressure depth testing equipment, and are guaranteed to resistant water up to 50m of depth. Seiko Originals have varied levels of depth resistance, which will be stated in the description of each watch.

Can I modify an existing design?

We welcome all ideas! Get in touch via the Contact Us page and we can let you know the possibility and cost of any potential alterations.

        What is your returns policy?

Due to the hand-made nature of the Seiko Mods, we offer a 7 day returns period after the watch has been received. The returner must bear the cost of the returns, and the watch must be returned in the same condition as it arrived. We do not offer returns on any bespoke or custom-made watches.

Due to the vintage nature of the Seiko Originals, returns are considered on a case-by-case basis, as vintage items typically have a no returns policy.
