Features:
The History. The world's first 1/100th of a second chronograph. Developed by Seiko for the 1992 Barcelona Olympics, the 7T59 movement added an entirely new tier of precision. It’s not just a case of “blink and you’ll miss it” - keep your eyes firmly open and you’ll still miss it. The red 1/100th hand is usually a blur - and under certain light, it vanishes completely when running.
The Design. It’s an odd-looking watch. No point pretending otherwise. It’s the sort of watch Captain Nemo would have worn as he charted a new course aboard the Nautilus in 20,000 Leagues Under the Sea. In short - it’s ugly. But it owns that ugliness. You don’t have to like it, but you do have to respect its confidence. Every time I look at one, my brain internally struggles to both love and hate it simultaneously.
The Caseback. It’s got a great caseback though. Sadly I have no idea what it’s specifically meant to symbolise, but it certainly feels patriotic. A Japanese-style rising sun, a laurel wreath of victory, and what looks suspiciously like the American stripes. Released in 1993, it must be commemorating something between the US and Japan - any ideas?
The Bells. The full set, which is on offer today, came with additional leather straps and an ingenious snap-on bracelet. These days, this type of strap is typically described as being like an Apple watch, but here’s Seiko doing it more than 30 years prior. When you consider the original price tag of $2,200, it’s hardly surprising that it’s got a lot of bells and whistles!
