The Origin. Seiko released several Monopushers, but the 45899 was the first - not just of its kind, but Japan’s first chronograph wristwatch. Several design iterations would follow, but this was the original variant, distinguished by its coveted Olympic torch caseback.
The Event. When Tokyo hosted the Olympics in 1964, Seiko was named the Official Timekeeper for the event. It was a pivotal opportunity to elevate the brand on the world stage, and Seiko responded by releasing three timepieces that embodied the spirit of the games. The 6217-7000 World Time, 5718-8000 Counter, and the 45899 on offer today.
The Look. It has a classic but familiar look - the pleasant mix that arises when a vintage design is so good that its elements get borrowed and reimagined by modern references. In fact, even at the time of its release, it had an avant-garde look - combining the dauphine hands and applied indices found on a typical Crown dress watch with a generous helping of lume typically reserved for rugged references like the Laurel Alpinist.
The Bezel. But even from a distance, the rotating bezel makes the intent of the watch unmistakeable. This is a sports watch. The bezel acts like a chronograph minute subdial - allowing you to align the bezel with the minute hand and easily keep track of the elapsed minutes.
Specifications:
Condition: In very good condition overall. Just serviced. The dial and caseback are particularly well preserved. Various small marks and signs of aging are visible across the watch, but nothing particularly unpleasant.
