Seiko SAGV005 Perpetual Calendar; Full Titanium
Seiko SAGV005 Perpetual Calendar; Full Titanium
A lightweight titanium Perpetual Calendar from Seiko’s JDM “Big Date” Kinetic line. Very rare.
Model: SAGV005, 7D48-0AD0 Seiko Kinetic Perpetual
Year: March 2008
Features:
JDM. Only produced for a short time and only sold in Japan, this is a classic unintentional “limited edition” from Seiko. As far as I can tell this watch hasn’t come up for sale in the West in many years, if ever! The dial has a beautifully textured cross-hatched look to it.
Kinetic Movement. The 7D46 movement is a hybrid pre-cursor to the Grand Seiko’s Spring Drive movement. Just like in an automatic mechanical watch, your arm/wrist movements spin a rotor that powers the watch. However, unlike a standard automatic movement, energy is stored in a capacitor and then passed through quartz crystal.
The Advantages. Being a hybrid between mechanical and quartz has several distinct advantages. Thanks to the quartz crystal the watch is accurate to +/- 15 seconds per month. However, unlike a quartz watch you don’t need to replace the battery every 1 or 2 years as the battery isn’t generating the power; your movement is. The recommended replacement for a Kinetic Capacitor is every 10-20 years! When fully powered, the watch has a huge 10-day power reserve. When not in use, the watch enters “auto relay” mode which is essentially a form of hibernation. While hibernating, in order to conserve power, the watch stops ticking, but a tiny IC stays powered and keeps track of the time and date. As soon as you pick the watch up all of the hands spring to life and the calendar and time set themselves accurately. It can stay in a state of hibernation for up to four years.
High-End. It was a part of Seiko’s luxury line up at the time of release, costing $1300. It features a sapphire crystal and a titanium cushion case with the original titanium bracelet – sized up to 7.2 inches (18.5cm).
Condition: In very good condition overall. There are some hairline scratches on the case, but I wouldn’t describe any of them as particularly noticeable. The only noticeable markings are on the polished case back, as it has mild wear from the bracelet scratching it. The photos represent the condition well.
Scope: Full kit. Original box, manual, papers.
Movement: 7D48 Kinetic Hybrid. 10-20 years of “battery” life, according to Seiko’s specs. 10-day power reserve, a 4-year hibernation state if the watch is unworn..
