Seiko SBCJ031 Titanium Alpinist
Seiko SBCJ031 Titanium Alpinist
An early 2000s, now discontinued, titanium 8F56 HAQ (+/- 20 seconds per year) GMT Perpetual Calendar Alpinist from Seiko.
Model: Seiko SBCJ031 / 8F56-00D0
Year: April 2003
Complications: It’s both GMT and a Perpetual calendar. The calendar won’t need correcting until February 28, 2100. Despite having a GMT hand, it’s still an Alpinist at heart so there’s rotating inner compass bezel instead of a World Timer bezel. The bezel can be used to determine the direction of North as long as you can see the Sun.
The Movement: In its very nature quartz is very accurate (typically +/- 15 seconds per month), but the 8F56 is a High Accuracy Quartz (HAQ) movement meaning it maintains an accuracy of +/- 20 seconds per year!
Not to be confused: This isn’t a SBCJ021. This is the rarer SBCJ031! The SBCJ021 has a fully lumed dial, and 12 shark teeth markers. This is a lumed cream dial with lumed hands, and an attractive mix of shark teeth and Arabic markers, akin to a SCVF007.
The Battery: The 8F56 battery up to a 10-year lifespan. It was replaced in 2024 so you’re good to go for a while!
Materials: The case is titanium making it incredibly lightweight. A mix of polished and brushed surfaces give it a rugged but smart appearance.
The Condition: In good condition. The crystal is flawless. Totally unpolished, so the titanium casing has hairlines scratches throughout. It can be polished easily, but I wouldn’t recommend you rush to polish Titanium. It will look good for a week, but it’s such a soft metal (compared to Stainless Steel) that the polished surfaces are always going to gently mark. The photos show the condition well. The watch has just been serviced by Seiko Japan (June 2024), and had its battery replaced at the same time. You can expect up to 10 years from the battery.
Scope: No box or papers.
Movement: 8F56 HAQ

- Case Width: 38.5mm
